What's the difference between the JBA STD and JBA HD Toyota UCAs
What's the difference between the JBA STD and JBA HD Toyota UCAs
JBA STD Toyota UCAs for the Tacoma, 4Runner & FJ Cruiser VS JBA HD Toyota UCAs for the Tacoma, 4Runner & FJ Cruiser
First I will start with the STD (standard duty) a-arms, they were designed for the weekend warrior who worked hard all week and wants to play hard on the weekends with his Toyota. The JBA UCAs will give you 1" extra down travel on the front suspension with more ball joint travel and strut spring clearance.
JBA STD Toyota a-arm
The JBA STD A-arm tubing is 5/32" wall and 1" dia. with a Moog style K6292 ball joint. On the JBA HD (heavy duty) A-arms are thicker tubing, with 3/16" wall and 1-5/16" dia with 11ga guests on the bushing bongs. The HD a-arms are for more extreme offroad abuse like offroad racing, rock crawling and dune jumping.
Both STD & HD will work with the Fox extended travel coilovers and the JBA Coilovers.
If your steering knuckle is reinforced get the JBA HD a-arms.
If you jump your Toyota you need the HD a-arms, If your steering knuckle is reinforced with a weld on gusset you need the HD a-arms.
The Ball joint range of motion
Up travel is 40 deg off of center line of the ball joint, down travel is 50 deg off of center line. Full range of motion is 90 deg. Note: you will not get that kind of extreme travel with a uni-ball joint
More spring clearance is
More suspension travel
More articulation, See JBA vs Uniball
More traction on the trails
More Caster
JBA UCAs give you MORE for your money!!
In conclusion the JBA STD a-arms are for a daily driver/weekend warrior the JBA HD a-arms are for extreme offroad use.
The JBA Upper A-Arms, upper control arms (UCAs) were designed for your lifted Toyota Tacoma "05" Plus, 4Runner "03" Plus, FJ Cruisers "07" Plus and will directly replace your stock upper a-arms. The original equipment a-arm (UCAs) hits the spring, on Toyota Tacoma with a lift kit. The JBA A-Arms are compatible with all the lift kits on the market today! These A-Arms (UCAs) were designed to fit Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ. Made of heavy duty tubing, red powder coat finish, with replaceable ball joints. The A arms (UCAs) are assembled and ready to bolt onto your Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, or FJ.
I am confused... Why do the ball joints look different in different photos? Some look like dark metal and some look like shiny metal. What ball joints come with the std arms and what come with the hd arms? Why are there 2 different replacement ball joints? What is a moog ball joint and how dose that differ from the other ball joint other then price? Please answer all questions. Thanks.
Brian,
In 2007 we started making UCAs using Moog ball joints. At one time Moog was the go to for aftermarket replacement parts. Moog is now importing a lot of there product lines and the quality has drop below our JBA standards. We originally introduced the Toyota UCAs with the dark metal Moog ball joints and now have made the switch to our own JBA shiny ball joints. All the Toyota a-arms have the JBA ball joint in them when we ship the orders. Some of the pictures on our web site are out of date with the old Moog joints.
We copied the hole pattern and the fitment of the Moog K6292 but we gave it 90 degrees range of motion for the offroad applications and we make them in Pennsylvanian. We are proud to have our a-arms made in the USA.
You can buy a Moog K6296 at any auto parts store in the US in an emergency situation and get back on the trails. The price difference is Moog is making hundreds of thousands of these ball joints overseas and we are making 400 a month.
Also regarding lower control arms and cam bolts on 05-11 Tacoma's do you guys have any recommendation, experience? Was looking at the moog but as you said on the website their quality is not what it used to be, I've checked out total chaos etc, im looking for something closer to OE rather than high performance lca.
I read in you description that you will need different wheels if running 16" rims and 285 tires. Will the STD High Caster JBA UCA's work with a Lifted 2018 TRD Pro with factory 17"x8" wheels and 285/70/17 tires?
I have a 2006 4runner with stock 17" sport wheels. I understand the STD UCA will require spacers on tires over 32.5. What about the HD UCA? I would likely be going with 33's and am worried about rub. Would prefer not to get spacers but figured i would get your feedback.
Steve,
It will depend on the wheel width and wheel backspace. If to much backspace the tires will rub the UCAs. Set up properly there will be on problem.
I’m considering the STD UCA’s as a replacement for my stock one’s on my 2018 SR5 Premium 4Runner. I just upgraded to Eibach pro-truck sport front struts and rear shocks for a 2.5” front lift and combined the rear with 1.5” Daystar spacers for the rear lift. I have stock size 265/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks on TRD Pro wheels that have +4 offset and I believe a 4.5” backspace. I’m also considering adding 1.25” Spidertrax wheel spacers to widen the stance a bit more and even at a later time replacing my stock coil springs with upgrades but I have not decided for sure yet that I will do this. My questions are will the JBA STD UCA’s work well with both my current setup and my possible future upgrades with the wheel spacers and aftermarket coils without any rubbing or other issues? Also in time if I were to eventually upgrade my tire size to 275/70/17 or 285/70/17’s, would this create any issues? Thanks!
The critical dimensions are tire diameter, any tire over 32.5", width of tire, width of wheel & wheel backspace or offset. See details at the link above.
You need to know all the critical dimensions to determine a fit.
I have a 5th gen 4runner that I wheel almost every weekend. I'm trying to decide between HD and Std control arms. I do hard trails like hells revenge and other's in moab as well as Colorado trails where I live like black bear. It's also my d d. It has icon stage 2 lift with factory size wheels.
Will you guys ever make an HD uca for the 3rd gen? Since you currently only make the STD's? If the answer is no... will i be able to use the STD with a coilover?
I have 5th gen sr5 4wd. Im tryna decide HD or STD. This is my daily drive to work and i go pretty much every weekend. I do more on hard trail. I like to go send it all the time. My lift is Bilstein 5100 2.5" front. What should i get? Thanks
11.2" wide tire, if the wheel is 8" wide, you need a 4.50" backspace or smaller to clear the JBA ucas.
16 × 8 -12 = 4.00" backspace you are good to go!!
Do you ship to nova scotica, if so would you know the shipping cost postal code is b0w2s0.
Thanks

As for the future tires, they will work with the wheel spacer.

We will not be making HDs for the 3rd Gen.
The request and the need for HDs are very low.
We have a lifetime warranty on the steel frame, So if you have a problem JBA will replace it.
